| Cultural
Competency: Self-Assessment |
This training
covers basic understanding of cultural competence
in the context of a workforce. Awareness of
differences and cultural sensitivity is presented
by using experiential tools to increase audience
awareness of how their cultural competence level
will impact relationships with consumers, peers
and the business world. A broad perspective of
cultural competence is presented encompassing
race, ethnicity and gender, as well as other
variables. Finally, participants will become
familiar with the stages of cultural competency
(or continuum) and will be able to determine where
they currently lie on that continuum. Part of the
training involves a self evaluation guide to
assess where training participants fall in the
cultural competence continuum. The participants
will learn the value of the concept of
acculturation in becoming culturally competent and
will also venture into other cultural
environments. |

| Cultural
Competency in Self Advocacy and Empowerment |
| The training
focuses on enhancing skills for consumers of
mental health services. The purpose of this
training is to create awareness of the importance
of cultural competence in advocacy and
empowerment. Issues of value orientation and
acculturation skills will be discussed in the
context of recovery. A broad perspective is
presented encompassing race, ethnicity and gender,
as well as other factors. Participants will become
familiar with the stages of cultural competency
(or continuum) and will be able to determine where
they currently lie on that continuum. |

| Tools to
Improve Cultural Competence |
| The focus and
objective of this training is to give the audience
a basic understanding of cultural competence in
the context of a diverse community. This training
includes experiential exercises to familiarize the
audience with the personal aspects of cultural
competence when relating to other individuals. A
broad perspective is presented encompassing race,
ethnicity and gender, as well as other factors.

| Cultural
Competency and Mental Health Diagnosis - Working
with Latinos |
| The objective of
this training is to develop in the listener an
understanding of the impact culturally competent
services can have in the clinical outcomes of
Latino consumers. The training explores the
concepts of value orientation, acculturation and
help-seeking behaviors that are important
considerations when delivering mental health
services to Latinos. Lastly, participants are
involved in developing strategies to include these
concepts when diagnosing Latino mental health
consumers. |

| Culture Bound
Syndromes and Culture |
| This training
module equips the participant with basic cultural
principles to consider when conducting diagnostic
interviews. It introduces culture-bound syndromes
as a significant element both contextually and
when interpreting the presentation of symptoms as
presented by the consumer. Participants will
discuss "susto", "empacho", "nervios", "koro" and
"zar" in the context of western diagnostic
criteria. Participants will engage in the
development of a general criteria list that can be
followed when considering cultural variables. |

| The Value of
Natural Support Systems: Expanding Your Service
Network |
| This training
addresses the importance of the natural support
systems in working with Latino migrants. The
audience will be presented with information that
leads to understanding of why and how natural
support systems emerge in the context of
migration. A prime focus of this training is to
understand the obstacles faced by migrants and how
these obstacles can be overcome by utilizing
natural support systems. This training will also
examine barriers to the provision of culturally
sensitive services. Participants will be presented
with a roadmap for developing culturally competent
services. |

Interpretation: What you need to know |
| The goal of this
training is to give the audience the necessary
skills and knowledge for providing interpretation
services. This training is designed for
interpreters and providers. The audience will
learn necessary skills to interpret language, core
competencies for interpreters, how to set up an
interpretation program and the outcomes of
effective interpretation. |

| Cultural
Competency: An Important Tool in Reducing Health
Disparities |
| The goal of this
training is to present the audience with
information to increase awareness of the role of
racial and ethnic biases on healthcare delivery.
The topic of health disparities has received
national attention in recent years. Studies point
to the relationship between the provider’s racial
and ethnic biases and the way healthcare is
delivered to culturally diverse consumers.
Cultural competence and increased awareness of
racial biases are variables that will help reduce
disparities in health care. |

| Cultural
Competency: Program Development and Design |
| This training
offers participants tangible strategies for
implementing a cultural competency program within
their practice using “no-cost,” “low-cost,” and
“higher-cost” interventions in program design. |

| Diversity as
a Business Strategy |
| A diverse
business strategy will improve the relationship of
the business with employees, suppliers, customers
and the community at large. This session will
present the audience with outcomes related to the
development of a business strategy to address
diversity issues. This forum will also discuss
work factors that affect a diverse climate to
develop in a business environment and the role of
cultural competence in managing an effective
business. Lastly, participants will be given a
framework to begin assessing how areas in their
current business can benefit from maximizing a
diverse workforce. |
